When I was asked by my manager to look for the biggest and baddest conference regarding the web, I immediately thought of the Web 2.0 Expo co-presented by CMP Technology and O’Reilly Media. It’s held every year in San Fransisco, and they are actually responsible for coining the term back in 2004.

If you don’t know what the term Web 2.0 means, get it from the horse. I realize that it deals with a couple of different things like mash-ups and wikis and blogging and blah blah blah. My interpretation of it:

Web 2.0 is the current generation of the Internet, where programs can connect with other programs, people can connect with other people, and basically, you can tailor services specifically to your needs by sharing and editing information.

It’s an innovative way of thinking. Imagine if it didn’t matter where you put your files on your computer, or even what they are named. You could find anything you wanted because of what it contains. That’s Web 2.0 in a nutshell: Content over presentation.

Here’s a video I came across a while back, that may add sense to the whole idea:

And if you really want to know more, here is an article that takes it further, talking about the need for structured information. Geez.

I’ve never been to a conference before (does Young Author’s Conference count?). I would have loved to go to Comicon back when comics were still cool (ie. 1992), or CES of course, or even (ahem) AVN. I just never had the opportunity to go. Now that I do, I’m very excited; especially now that I am officially part of the big robot that is the industry.

Registering starts in December. Come with me! Find out more here.
